What is the Boston City Council?

 The Boston City Council is the Legislative Body for the City of Boston.  City Council is responsible for creating ordinances, which is a statute or law enacted by a city government.  They work with the mayor to create the city budget and approve the funding of city run operations.

How many Councilors are there and what is the difference between District and At Large?

 There are a total of 13 Boston City Councilors.  The city is broken down into 9 different districts with one councilor representing each district.  There are 4 At Large Councilors which are elected city wide.  An At large councilor represents the entire city of Boston which includes districts such as (Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale ….)

If you voted in Boston for the 2004 Presidential Election then you may be eligible to vote in this up coming city election (Please Check with the Elections Department if you are unsure of your voting status by clicking the link below).

Each voter is allowed 4 votes for the At Large Candidates because there are 4 seats available.  Each voter then gets one vote for their choice of district councilor candidates.
